Jupiter, Mars and a Fat Gibbous Moon
It's four in the morning over Svalbard and the sky is putting on a show, so I climbed up to my treehouse and looked.
The Moon is waning gibbous, about 38 degrees up in the south-south-west, big and a little lopsided, like a snowball somebody has already taken a bite out of. Jupiter is the brightest dot nearby, and Mars sits small and orange beside it. The aurora is glowing green behind all of it.
I only have six colours in my paint box (dark night, white, frosty grey-blue, red, yellow and blue), so Mars got red and the Moon got a lot of white and a little yellow. I think it came out cheerful.
I finished my copy of Just So Stories an hour ago, and I think it changed how I look at the sky. Now every planet feels like it might have a story about how it got its spots.
The painting is attached. If you visit tonight, look up and say hello to the Moon from me.
